Due to our strict access control to the Calanga area and the fact that this is a complete new Development and totally unspoiled and natural, this is one of the very few areas left where you can enjoy surf fishing at its best.
How often do you spend a whole day fishing in the surf and then return empty handed to home?
Well, this is not the case at Calanga. Just look at our “Photo Gallery” for the proof of our catches of the day.
You will need to find out as much information as possible about the best times, bait and other necessities to go surf fishing. It is best to pay a visit to the local fishermen before you set for surf fishing.
If you are a rookie and would want to learn surf fishing, it is better to practice on a calm day. First thing that you need to know is to cast. It takes a lot of mastery before you could be a very good surfcaster. Remember that you can cast just near because fishes usually are at the break line. It is essential to use the correct rod and reel.
Surf fishing is a very specialized type of fishing and it requires some very specialized tackle. It is best to pay a visit with your local Angling shop to get the best advice from what to use for a specific area. Don’t be ashamed to mention that you are a beginner because fishing tackle is expensive.
Don’t be surprised if you get a hook-up on a large “Couta” (King Mackerel) from the surf at Calanga.
Very large “Springers” are also a regular catch in the winter months. Large “Shad” from June to September.

Surf fishing is consistent year round, with Calanga being one of the top surfcasting destinations in Mozambique.
With prior consent and a valid license from Management, Calanga is one of the few places a visitor can still drive on the beach as long as you abide by all the rules and regulations.
Surf fishing might look like a great deal of calm and easy fun. Some people make it seem easy, but surf fishing is a lot harder and skilled than you may think. There are many calculations that you have to make in order to have a successful day. The weather, the moon and wind, the current, wave height, low or high tide needs to be calculated before you can cast your line and get started.
The first thing that you need to do before you attempt surf fishing is to prepare ahead of time. Most places will require you to have a fishing license and if you get caught without one, a fine will more than ruin your mood.

Here is what you will need when surf fishing:
- Rod – You might not use a surf rod. Actually, you can use a medium rod about 6 to 7 feet. The shorter the rod, the better you can shift places - the length of your rod will still depend on your casting skill. You can even use a rod, which is 10 to 12 feet long
- . Reel – You can use the conventional one but most often, the spinning reels are the one being used.
- Rod-holder – You can have the sand spike rod-holder. This will help you tostay in one area
- . Bait-holder hooks – You need to have these because even if you are either using dead bait or live bait, you will be needing hooks.
- Baits – The most commonly used bait for surf fishing is sand crabs. You may chooseto use the soft shell over the hard one. But you can also make your personal choice from baits line salted anchovy, mussel, shrimp, squid or mackerel.
- Rig – Choose a sliding sinker reg. This does not make it obvious for the fish that you have the sinker. Usually, fish will drop the bait once the feel the sinker.
Remember - practice is the key.

We call Calanga the birthplace of Kayak fishing in the southern part of Africa. Our local community was cut-off from the modern world for many years due to the inaccessibility to the Calanga area. They depended on this traditional way of fishing to survive in this unspoiled and untamed piece of Africa.
